Stainless steel border fork and spade
These sturdy tools are made in the Far East from mirror-polished stainless steel, which reduces soil adhesion and therefore reduces effort when digging. The handle and shafts are made in one piece from plastic and makes these tools very good value for money.

Especially good for people with back problems.

Shorter length fork and spade

These new forks and spades have been specially made for shorter users and are subsequently lighter as well. They are very useful in confined spaces.

Made in the traditional way and solid forged from one piece of steel these little tools are extremely strong and have ash handles.

Long-handled round point shovel
In the West Country, Ireland and parts of Europe this type of tool is used more often than traditional forks and spades. Its popularity among construction workers may be a testament to its functionality, certainly for digging holes and shoveling. Digging may be carried out whilst standing upright due to the long shaft, and deep holes can be dug without bending.

Long-handled small forks and trowels
For people who are unable to use full-size tools, the best option may be to use a hand-size tool on a longer handle. If fitted with a fist-grip handle and arm support these tools can be used effectively with one arm.

Long T-handled trowel and fork
These excellent long handled hand fork and trowels are especially good for working in confined spaces crowded borders or for general digging if you
have time and patience. The T handle enables the tool to be pushed more
easily into the soil and the more expensive stainless steel versions offer
even less resistance than the cheaper painted ones.

Midi spork

This well made tool is light and strong and ideal for shorter gardeners and wheelchair users. The unique tool head is a hybrid between a fork and spade which gives it more strength and the ability to move more soil than a standard hand fork. The wooden shaft has a very useful T handle to enable good control from different angles.

Cultivating tools

Points to consider:

1. A cultivating tool is a specialised tool for breaking up compacted soil. They are available in many shapes and sizes. Some of the larger ones can be adjusted to different widths to cultivate between rows of plants.
2. Cultivators work by dragging though the soil. The soil may then be leveled to some extent the soil by a pushing action.
3. Hand versions can be more easily moved sideways and are more efficient than a hand fork in this respect.

Cultivator
A large three-pronged cultivating tool used for quickly breaking up compacted soil. The tool is dragged backwards through the soil and can therefore be used without lifting or having to bend. Two hands are generally required to maintain downward pressure. It has stainless steel prongs and a snap-lock handle fitted to a wooden handle (available separately).

Especially good for people who use one arm and people who use a wheelchair.
