Used for reaching into the higher branches, tree pruning systems generally have a telescopic pole with a cord operated pruner or a saw attached to the end of the pole. The products listed here have a range of attachments to ensure that the tools are as versatile as possible.
Garden saws
It's sometimes tempting to use a carpenter's saw for jobs in the garden, but a garden saw is ideal as it has teeth specifically designed to cut live, green wood. The best garden saws are even more specialised and are designed to cut on the pull stroke, which brings the branch towards you and increases the cutting pressure and control.
For safety, buy a folding or retractable saw. If you find it too difficult to open a folding or retractable saw, buy a fixed blade saw with a scabbard.
Multi-change systems
Are tools with separate handles and interchangeable tool heads, which often include different saw attachments. These are useful as you can buy one saw attachment and then fit it to either a telescopic handle or a fixed length handle depending on the job you are doing.
Safety note
Take care when using these tools fully extended, stand well back and be aware of possible back strain - keep your back straight and do a little at a time. Considerable strength and co-ordination may also be required and a pole holder can help. These can usually be found in camping and scout shops. You may also want to consider wearing safety glasses.
