June - growing wallflowers (spring flowering varieties)

The wallflower is an old-fashioned garden flower which has an abundance of flowers and a delightful fragrance. Wallflowers come in a range of colours and varieties, choose one of the dwarf varieties such as Sunset Mixed F1 Hybrid which grow to 25 – 30cm (10 – 12in) in height and are perfect for containers.

How to do it

  • Fill your pot or module tray with compost.
  • Sow seeds thinly.
  • Cover with a light sprinkling of compost or vermiculite
  • Seal container inside a polythene bag and keep at a temperature of between 10 – 15C (50 – 59F).
  • Germination will usually take 7 to 14 days
  • Transplant seedlings into 7.5cm (3 in) pots or trays.
  • Grow on in cool, well-lit conditions.
  • Transplant into containers in September-October, 30cm (12in) apart.

TIP: Wallflowers can be grown in containers with bulbs. When you’re planting bulbs such as tulips, transplant the wallflower seedlings in groups at the same time.
